Ronald Clay Lawson, 94, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on April 27, 2019 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born February 24, 1925 near Monterey, Iowa to John Arthur “Art” and Iva Ethel Daniels Lawson. He married Letha Louise Schaffner on April 12, 1959 at the Christian Church Parsonage in Seymour, Iowa with his father-in-law officiating. The couple enjoyed 59 years together and raised two children, Dennis and Glenice. Letha passed away on June 19, 2018.

Ronald was a farmer. He farmed the majority of his life with his brother, Donald, and then later with his son, Dennis. He also sheared sheep, was an auctioneer, worked as a security guard at the Davis County Fairgrounds, and did carpentry work building homes, businesses, and a school. He served on the Moulton-Udell School Board for many years. Ronald was a good-natured family man who loved to laugh, tell stories, spend time with family and friends, play croquet, and play cards. His card playing tactics included “Cheating in fun” from time to time.

He is survived by his son, Dennis (Carol) Lawson of Bloomfield; daughter, Glenice (Howard) Graber of Bonaparte, Iowa; four grandchildren, Dustin (Kim) Lawson, Clarissa (Kyle) Prevo, Tiffany (Skyler) Howard, Tyler (Sylvia) Wagler; nine great-grandchildren, Gracie, Daylen, and Dalton Lawson, J.D., Lyla, Reed, and Emma Prevo, Ely Wagler, Adaline Howard; four sisters-in-law, Doris V. Lawson, Jerry, Carol, and Linda Schaffner; brother-in-law, Bob (Mary) Schaffner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Dyllan Lawson; six brothers, Flavey, Arthur, Clifford, Marvin, LaVerne, and Donald Lawson; and four sisters, Ilene Trimble, Reva, Faye, and Mable Lawson.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Reg Higginbottom officiating. Burial will be at the Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the family and will be designated at a later date

James Leon Jackson, 103, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida passed away on April 10, 2019 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He was born June 29, 1915 in Floris, Iowa to George Gladden and Freda Hining Jackson. He married Evelyn Hartwig on December 21, 1945. Evelyn passed away on December 19, 2001.

He is survived by his children, Lynda (Richard) Jackson Masulli of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Glen Leon (Crisina) Jackson of Sacramento, California; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and three brothers.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jack Jackson officiating. Burial will be at Bethlehem Cemetery in Davis County. Military rites will be performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Monday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ernie Morris Brammer Jr., 81, of Ottumwa, Iowa passed away on April 7, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. He was born February 20, 1938 in Chariton, Iowa to Ernie M. and Josie Ryun Brammer. He married Beverly Jean Frye on September 14, 1957 in Chariton. Beverly passed away on March 3, 2012.

Ernie worked as a shear operator for Emerson Electric Company in Pella, Iowa for many years. He loved spending time with his family and going camping with them. Ernie was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, bird watching, and deer hunting. He was also an artist, drawing pencil sketches and doing oil paintings.

He is survived by a daughter, Julie (Dennis) Harbour of Bloomfield; two sons, Bill (Brigitt) Brammer of Arlington, Texas, Bruce (Pat) Brammer of Tracy, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Cathleen Riley of Springfield, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Mike Brammer, Edwin Brammer; sister, Judy Heater; and step-father, Hugh Duffield.

Ernie’s wish was to be cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date with burial of the cremated remains at the Harbour Cemetery in Davis County. A memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.

Charles Calvin “Charlie” Spargur, 77, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on April 6, 2019 at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born September 17, 1941 in Kirksville, Missouri to Walter B. and Mary O. Alexander Spargur. When young, Charles was a Boy Scout. Three days after graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1959, he was in San Diego California in Navy boot camp. During his three years in the Navy, he served on the USS Prairie as a radioman. After his discharge in 1962, he worked as a nurse’s aide at the Davis County Hospital while interning under Dr. Meyers as an X-ray technician. He worked as a technician for ten years.

In 1963, he married Jane Fresh. They had two children, Debra and Tony. They later divorced. Charlie married Karen Griffith on April 26, 1985 in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Charlie worked for Bruce’s Furniture, AB Dick and Harris Motors. In 1980, he began working for Quality Motors and worked there until he became ill in 2008.

In 2016, after a lengthy illness, Charlie moved to the Bloomfield Care Center. Karen visited him almost every day and was with him when he passed away.

Charlie enjoyed car races, golfing and hunting. He was also a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church and Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion. He was the Commander of the Legion for four years and often helped at Bingo.

Surviving Charlie are his wife, Karen Spargur; son, Tony (Jennifer) Spargur of Bloomfield; son-by-marriage, Kirk Griffith of Durango, Colorado; daughter-by-marriage, Elizabeth (Tim) Walgamuth of Missouri City, Texas; three granddaughters, Sydney, Sophie and Sadie Spargur of Bloomfield; grandson, Zachary Walgamuth of Houston, Texas; brother-in-law, Jerry (Beth) Van Horn of Crete, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Joan Spargur of Belleville, Illinois; three nieces; and three nephews.

Those who preceded him in death are his parents; daughter, Debra Spargur; brother, Robert Spargur; and brother-in-law, Nicholas Van Horn.

According to his wishes, Charlie was cremated and a visitation will be held at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield on April 26, 2019 from 1-3:00 p.m. A military salute will be presented at the funeral home at 12:45 by Reed-Whisler Post #78. Memorials have been established to the Reed-Whisler Post #78 Scholarship Fund or the Bloomfield Christian Church and may be mailed to Karen Spargur, 402 E. South St. Apt. D-1, Bloomfield, Iowa.

Jessica Dawn Hougland Umphress, 37, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on April 1, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a brave battle with Systemic Scleroderma, which she was diagnosed with in June of 2015. Jessica was born on March 4, 1982 in Davis County, Iowa to Robert Lee and Kristi Jannene Downing Hougland Jr. She graduated from Davis County High School in 2000. On September 2, 2006, she married Dustin Umphress at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. The couple would later divorce. She has been in a relationship with Nate Norton since July 25, 2015 with plans for “Always and Forever.”

Jessica was a fun-loving person. She enjoyed going to concerts, listening to country music, being outdoors, an occasional Bloody Mary, and being around any kind of animal. Above all, Jessica loved spending time with her children and attending their events. She was very close to her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children, Justyn Hale of Oakland, Nebraska, Chloe and Ethan Umphress of Pulaski, Iowa; parents, Bob and Kris Hougland Jr. of Bloomfield; brother, Jason (Melissa) Hougland of Oskaloosa, Iowa; boyfriend, Nate Norton of Bloomfield; niece, Alexis Hougland; nephew, Chase Hougland; and numerous aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bob and Irene Hougland, Bill and Donna Downing; and two cousins, Jerry Hougland, Jaqueline Spurgeon.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with family present to greet friends from 4-6:00 p.m. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date at the Troy Cemetery in Troy, Iowa. A memorial has been established to her children.

Carolyn Elaine Offill, 64, of Mediapolis, Iowa passed away on April 1, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was born February 14, 1955 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Doyle Melvin and LaVada Glattfelder Offill. She graduated from Davis County High School in 1973.

Carolyn was an author and published a novel. She also wrote many short stories and poems. She was an animal activist and supported ASCPA and PETA. Carolyn also enjoyed collecting Barbies, taking care of her dogs, spending time with her family, and keeping a perfect home.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Upton; mother, LaVada Offill of Bloomfield; brother, Gerald (Mary) Offill of Vinton, Iowa; two nieces, Lydia Offill, Lana (Dustin) Robison; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services will be at noon on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Lee Karr officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation with family present will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. No memorial has been established.

Doris L. Lawson, 92, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born on August 6, 1925 near Troy, Iowa to Clarence and Grace Robbins Jones. She married Donald Lawson on December 11, 1954 in Bloomfield. Donald passed away on February 7, 1998.

Doris attended the Troy High School and graduated in 1942. She then moved to Bloomfield and worked as a cook at the Royal Café for several years. When she married Donald, they moved to a farm south of Monterey and raised their family. She was a member of the Monterey Christian Church and the Welcome Neighbors Club. She enjoyed family gatherings, reading, and cooking.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Wes Potter) Lawson of Bloomfield; three sons, Bill (Sherrie) Lawson, Bob (Vickey) Lawson, Larry Lawson all of rural Bloomfield; two granddaughters, Amanda (Kyle) Payne, Ashton Lawson; great-granddaughter, Addison Payne; brother-in-law, Ronald (Letha) Lawson; sister-in-law, Doris V. Lawson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Ralph, Max, Rex, and Hunter Jones; and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Reg Higgenbottom officiating. Judy Lee Ball, 69, of Fairfield, Iowa and former resident of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away September 30, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was born October 17, 1947 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Everett Raymond and Evelyn Dimmitt Garber. She graduated from Cardinal High School and married Rex Ball a few months later on September 30, 1967 in Eldon, Iowa. The day of her passing was their 50th wedding anniversary.

Judy was an outgoing person who never met a stranger. She enjoyed playing Bingo, watching car racing, and going to casinos. She also liked going to garage sales, flea markets, and the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a member of the Faith Christian Outreach Church in Mt. Pleasant.

She is survived by her husband, Rex Ball of Fairfield; son, Jimmy (Martha) Ball of Bloomfield; daughter, Paula (Tim) Otis of Anderson, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Garber of Bloomfield, Lavern Garber of Eldon, Iowa; special friends and caretakers, Jeff and Sheri Nelson of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shannon McMurry; and a brother, Harold Garber.

Larry Joe Walker, 81, of Floris, Iowa passed away September 25, 2017 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was born May 11, 1936 in Davis County, Iowa to Guy and Georgia Fouts Walker. He married Wanda Archer on March 29, 1959 at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Wanda passed away on December 1, 2016. While Wanda was sick at area nursing homes, Larry visited her every day and would spend as much time as he could with her.

Larry worked as an over-the-road truck driver and also drove a school bus for Davis County Schools for 23 years. He loved being outdoors camping, fishing, hiking, and shooting guns. He was an avid black powder enthusiast participating in area shoots and rendezvous with several friends. In his quiet time, Larry enjoyed reading books and listening to music. He served in the United States Army and spent time in Korea and Germany during the 1950’s.

He is survived by a brother, T.J. Walker of Victor, Colorado; nine nieces, and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two nieces.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Heath Jarvis officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Military rites will be performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield. Steven Ray “Fuzz” Williams, 57, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on August 28, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born November 27, 1959 in Bloomfield to Darrell R. and Ethel M. Webb Williams.

Steven was a farmer and a long-haul truck driver. He really enjoyed being out on the road and seeing different parts of the United States and Canada. He was blessed with the “Gift of Gab” and could talk to anyone about anything. He enjoyed meeting new people and eating. He was a member of the Mark Baptist Church.

He is survived by three children, Jake (Marianna) Williams of Bloomfield and Burbank, California, Kala (Dusty) Mulder of Bloomfield, Nathan (Ashley) Williams of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; three siblings, Twylla (Rick) Theisen of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Linda Scott of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Craig Williams of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Georgia Ann Wells, 85, of Ottumwa, Iowa and former resident of Pulaski, Iowa passed away with her family by her side on August 25, 2017 at the Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa. She was born on October 14, 1931 in Pulaski, Iowa to Samuel S. and Ocie E. Burnaugh Stevig. Georgia graduated from Pulaski High School in 1949 and married the love of her life, Joe Dean Wells, a few years later on January 7, 1951. The couple raised four children on a farm near Pulaski and lived there until retiring and moving to Ottumwa in 2003. Joe passed away on November 22, 2009.

Georgia loved being outdoors and working on the farm. She participated in every aspect of the farm whether it be driving a tractor, mowing the lawn, herding livestock, or tending to a garden where she grew vegetables and flowers. She became a Master Gardner and excelled at growing Gladiolus flowers. Georgia was also excellent in the kitchen with her specialty being cinnamon rolls or lime pickles that she would share with her family and friends. While living in Pulaski she was a member of the Tri-R Club and served on the Davis County Extension Council for many years.

After moving to Ottumwa, Georgia kept busy by making new friends, playing pitch, doing crossword puzzles, and jigsaw puzzles. The many jigsaw puzzles her and her friends completed were sold with the money going for humanitarian purposes. Georgia touched a lot of lives and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by four children, Dennis and Tony of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sharon Moritz of Northwood, Iowa, Don and Sue of Nevada, Iowa, Daryl and Rahni of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, Alicia Wells, Mason Wells, Karl and Alicia Moritz, Clayton Moritz; great-granddaughter, Kallie Moritz, the newest love of her life; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Viola Sporer, Marjorie Trachsel, Rebecca Sinkey; and two brothers, John and Lloyd Stevig.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Jack Knox officiating. Burial will be at the Pulaski Cemetery. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 4-6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

It is with great sadness that the family of Kolten Alec Fountain, 22, announces his passing on August 19, 2017 at his home in Ottumwa. He was born June 7, 1995 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Laurie Fountain and Mike Ferrell. Kolten graduated from Ottumwa High School in 2014 and attended Indian Hills where he graduated from the Welding Program. He had attended The Bridge Church in Ottumwa.

Kolten loved being around his family and friends. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them. Kolten would drop everything if someone called and needed him. He was always looking after his family, friends, and elderly neighbors. He was loving, loyal, and a fun person to be around. Kolten had a smile for everyone who crossed his path. He enjoyed fishing, lifting weights, and cheering for Iowa State and the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his mother, Laurie Fountain of Ottumwa; father, Mike (Stephanie) Ferrell of Ottumwa; sisters, Kaelee Fountain of Oskaloosa, Ava Ferrell of Ottumwa; brother, Bode Ferrell of Ottumwa; grandparents, Mary Fountain of Ames, Dennis and Joyce Ferrell of Ottumwa, Linda Ferrell of Ottumwa; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles Fountain and great-grandmother, Marjorie Pottorff.

Larry Duane Wardlow, 73, lifelong resident of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born April 16, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Edsil Wray and Anna Viola Cook Wardlow. He was a graduate of Davis County High School, class of 1963. For a few years during the late 60’s-70’s he worked for Darrell Kerby putting up grain bins. He spent the past 17 years in a nursing home facility. He was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.

He is survived by a brother, Bradley (Carol Matkovich) Wardlow of Centerville, Iowa; three sisters, Vicki (Doran) Houk of Bloomfield, Anita Trout of Des Moines, Iowa, Teresa (Danny) Porter of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Four nieces; six nephews; and a host of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; five uncles; and seven aunts.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Rev. Jim Wakelin officiating. Gerald Bolin, 72, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on July 25, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. He was born November 15, 1944 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Jesse Lowell and Nina Edith Wilson Bolin. He married Lois Jean Rogers on September 2, 1966 in Bloomfield.

Gerald was an outdoorsman and family man. He loved to take the family on trips camping, water skiing, kayaking, visiting amusement parks, and other various outdoor activities. He also enjoyed watching Professional Bull Riding in Des Moines, Iowa and Springfield, Missouri as-well-as on television. Although Gerald enjoyed his free time, he also really enjoyed working on the farm raising cattle and working in the hay fields. He also worked in the maintenance department at Everco in Ottumwa for over 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Bolin; son, Marty (Becky) Bolin of Bloomfield; two daughters, Marla (Tim) Hale of Floris, Iowa, Marcy (Eddie) Jones of Bloomfield; “Grandpa’s Pals,” Brittany Derby, Brooke Derby, Jalen Bolin, Skylar, Courtney, and Marissa Jones; a great-granddaughter, Kallie; five step-grandchildren, Chelsie, Andrea, Zach (Courtney) Hale, Kierstin Martin, Meredith Strunk; three step-great-grandchildren, Leland, Jenson, Rhett; two sisters, Betty (Eldon) Spurgeon of Eldon, Iowa, Benita Gideon of Ottumwa, Iowa; loving dog, Buddy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Brenda Price, Bondeena Sample; and a nephew, Ronnie Rysdam.

She was born October 12, 1932 in Centerville, Iowa to George O’Toole and Velma Temple Lawson. She married Willis Cleon Harris on March 16, 1950. He preceded her in death on September 6, 2016. Sara worked at Bruce’s Furniture for many years as-well-as working for a flower shop, Quik Time in Drakesville, and as a Bookkeeper for area farmers. She was a member of the West Grove United Methodist Church.

Sara was an outgoing person who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She liked going to Casinos, playing BINGO, taking care of her flowers, and going to the Farmer’s Market in Bloomfield. She also like going to the Davis County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Larry Robinson) Dove of Centerville, Iowa; son, Rick (Pam) Harris of Bloomfield; six grandchildren, Ginger (Jason) Burgin, Gidget (Scott) Arnold, Haley Chance, Charlie (Erin) Harris, Travis (Kristi) Harris, Roxanne (Adam) Harris; twelve great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Helen Harris of Bloomfield; Siblings, Bill (Nancy) O’Toole, Betty Smith; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Wayne Adair; and special friends Jerry and Sharon Padget, Dale and Jackie White.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Georgia Adair; great-grandson, Zachary Barber; and father-in-law, Willis Harris.

Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 2-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Open visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Cremation will follow the visitation and burial of the cremated remains will be at the West Grove Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established to her family.

Cheryl Lynn Fleming, 65, of Pulaski, Iowa passed away July 13, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Cheryl was born a true Virgo, September 19, 1951 to Milton and Mary (Queisner) Heiser. Her parents moved their family to Pulaski when she was in the 8th grade. She attended Davis County High School, graduating with the class of 1969. Upon graduation she attended school at Wichita State University. Shortly after college she was united in marriage to Michael Fleming on September 8, 1973 in Bloomfield, Iowa. The two began their wedded life working together for Cheryl’s father at the Pulaski Elevator. Together they became the loving parents to two children, Wray and Samantha. As she began her life as a mother she also began working for the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk in the Bloomfield office. She remained there until her retirement in 2014. In her retirement she managed to master the game of solitaire and enjoyed bringing stacks of books home from the library to read. She liked to can vegetables from the garden that she and Michael cared for. Cheryl was an avid mushroom hunter and always enjoyed a good round of golf as well as being the president of the Current River Canoers Association, Pulaski Chapter.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Michael of Pulaski, Iowa; her children, Wray Fleming of Pulaski, Samantha (Victor) Tira of Denver, Colorado; her mother and step-father, Mary (Melvin) Land; two brothers, David (Connie) Heiser and Fred Heiser, as well as many extended family and friends.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Milton Heiser and two sisters, Jo Ellen Ebeling and Amy Cassimatis.
As were Cheryl’s wishes her body has been cremated. Celebration of Life Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Sonny Smyser officiating. Douglas Hunter Boyd Sr., 63, of Milton, Iowa passed away June 30, 2017 at the Iowa City VA Hospital. He was born July 28, 1953 in Keosauqua, Iowa to Francis Harold and Hazel Azalea Hunter Boyd. He married Shirley Lenox in May of 1976 in Milton, Iowa. They were divorced. He married Linette Widmar in May of 1989 in Ottumwa, Iowa. They were divorced.

Doug served in the United States Army as a member of the Military Police. After serving time in Korea, he returned to Iowa and worked for the Ottumwa Police Department. He was a policeman for over 20 years. In his free time, he enjoyed Hunting, fishing, cooking, and being outdoors. During the summer months he loved to spend time at Leech Lake in Minnesota. He was a member of the NRA and the Iowa State Police Association.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel Boyd of Milton, Iowa; three daughters, Bridgette (Jason) Lough of Bloomfield, Amanda Boyd of Reinbeck, Iowa, Natasha (Eric Hootman) Boyd of Bloomfield; two sons, Douglas Boyd Jr., Robert (Cheyanne Randall) Boyd both of Ottumwa, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Jenna, Jordan, Jalee Lough, Trevor Koellner, Zane Scott, Karson Spurgeon, Lane Boyd, Jacob and Paul Hootman, Kaydence and Wyatt Boyd; brother, JR (Mary) Boyd; three sisters, Myra (Ross) Madden, Teresa (Bob) Cole, Tamara Van Pelt; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was born July 20, 1933 in Green City, Missouri to Arthur Clarence and Dortha Lavelle Daniels Sayre. He married Carol Kinney on June 24, 1956 in Scotland County, Missouri. Carol passed away on January 10, 2003.

Joe was a mechanic for Vaughn Motor Company and Bloomfield Ford, retiring in 1999 after 43 years. He was a mechanic at heart always tinkering with cars, tractors, and lawn mowers. In his free-time he enjoyed fishing and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Joe served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Barker United Methodist Church in Scotland County, Missouri.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Philip) Gaffney of Milton, Iowa; three sons, Randy (Dolores) Sayre of Downing, Missouri, Danny (Connie) Sayre of Elkland, Missouri, Rick (Teresa) Sayre of Unionville, Iowa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Clarence (Rosalie) Kinney.

Dr. Alan W. Gravett, 60, of Ottumwa, Iowa went into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 8th, 2017. Alan was born on November 27, 1956 in El Paso, Texas to Doran and Roberta Owens Gravett. He married Donna Barbara Susan Smith on April 27, 1991.

Alan graduated from Davis County High School in 1975. He went on to get his medical degree at the University of Iowa and received board certification in emergency medicine. He also had degrees in occupational and sports medicine.

Alan was a fun and loving man, husband, father, son, and brother. He started a cattle farm operation in Davis County and helped raise five beautiful children in Illinois while dedicating his life to, with all his heart, taking care of his family and others.

He was kind, funny, and helpful to everyone and held a passion for learning, football, forestry, and world history.

Alan worked as a physician in various emergency rooms across Illinois, Iowa, and northern Missouri, saving countless lives throughout his career. He was diligently researching in hopes of finding new treatments for cancer.

He is preceded in death by his father, Doran Gravett.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; five children, Amber, Cody, Nick, Dylan, and Abby; mother, Roberta; brother, Brian (Debbie) Gravett; two sisters, Lynn (Pete) Roers, Renee (Michael) Michaud; three brothers-in-law, Allen (Wendy) Smith, Michael (Sue) Smith, John Smith; three sisters-in-law, Lori (Steven) Kennedy, Sandy Smith, Marian (Gary) Lagerstrom; niece Kasey Heldrich; and two nephews, Andrew and Joseph Heldrich.

Treva worked at the Davis County Hospital from 1982 - 1995. She started in the kitchen and eventually moved to the respiratory therapy department. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, canning, and being on the family farm. When she was younger she attended Christ’s Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by her husband; brother, Tracy (Joan) Baker of Ottumwa; three sisters, Tamra Deevers, Trudy (Robert) Major both of Albia, Iowa, Tess (Jon) Moore of Humphreys, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

She was born September 19, 1923 in Moulton, Iowa to Otis and Ella Mae Randolph Davis. She married Carl Pirtle on August 16, 1941 in Kirksville, Missouri. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and was always proud of the jewelry he spoiled her with. Carl passed away on October 20, 2009.

Dorothy and her twin sister, Doris, were the best of friends and were always together. They shared a special bond that will be reunited in heaven as Doris has been waiting for Dorothy since December 5, 2014. Dorothy will greet her sister with a smile, painted fingernails, and probably a Diet Coke or R.C. Cola in hand, just like in life.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Pirtle of Moberly, Missouri; daughter, Janice (Cliff) Bierwagen of Gilbert, Arizona; four grandchildren, Rhonda Wright, Peggy Taylor, Kimberly Wegner, Christopher Wegner; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Peterson, Megan Wright, and Riley Zinnert; and a great-great-grandson on the way.

She married Henry Clay Smith on December 6, 1940 in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1968.

Esther worked in housekeeping at the Davis County Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1980. While active in the community she was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary in Bloomfield and the Floris Christian Church. She was a lifetime resident of Davis County.

She is survived by a daughter, Carrie (Mike) Crane of Selma, Iowa; son, Kelley (Launa) Smith of Long Grove, Illinois; three grandchildren, Greg (Arlynne) Smith of Palatine, Illinois, Mark (Eunyi) Smith of Huntington Woods, Michigan, Becky (Steve) Storckman of Round Lake, Illinois; five great-grandchildren, Claire and Holly Smith, Evan Smith, Charlotte and Kurt Storckman; and several nieces and nephews.

Iva Dell Roberts, 85, of Troy, Iowa passed away May 11, 2017 at her home. She was born March 14, 1932 in Van Buren County, Iowa to Leo H. and Clara A. Zeitler Law. She married Earl “Hickory” Roberts on April 1, 1950 in Centerville, Iowa. The couple ran the Troy Store together from 1978 – 1990. Earl passed away on the same day 22 years ago, May 11, 1995.

Iva Dell lived in the Troy area all of her life. She loved to visit with people and enjoyed a fun argument when she thought she was right. If anyone had a question about Troy history, Iva Dell was the person to ask. She loved living on the farm and was one of the hardest working women you could ever meet. While she was away from work, she enjoyed being outside fishing, mowing the grass, listening to the birds, and working with cattle. She also enjoyed making afghans, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching soap operas and old westerns. Iva Dell loved her kids dearly and was happy to spend time with all of them. She will be greatly missed and dearly remembered.

She is survived by three children, Dennis Roberts of Eldon, Iowa, Mike (Danita) Roberts of Bloomfield, Carol (Dewey) Coatney of Troy; five grandchildren, Thomas Roberts, Jenni Roberts, Alissa (Joey) Swarts, Troy Roberts, Trisha (Casey) Keim; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lillian Ritz of Bloomfield, Lovetta Jarvis of Troy.

Larry Allan Collins, 77, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 6, 2017 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born September 26, 1939 in Springfield, Illinois to James and Martha Montgomery Collins. He married Karol Kimball September 18, 1965 in Bloomfield. Karol passed away January 22, 2015.

Larry served in the United States Navy after graduating from high school in Illinois. After the Navy, he worked for the City of Ottumwa for a few years before getting hired at John Deere Ottumwa Works. He would later transfer to the Waterloo John Deere Plant until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he owned and operated the “Collins Café” with his wife for 10 years. The café was located in the Ballingall Hotel in Ottumwa.

Larry enjoyed early morning coffee with his “Coffee Club.” He also enjoyed going out to eat with friends, fishing, spending time with family, and swinging by the Can-Dough Redemption Center in Ottumwa to pester his daughter, Leanna.

He is survived by his twin daughters, Leanna (Amy Vanderburg) Collins of Ottumwa, Deanna Collins of Bloomfield; two grandchildren, Joe (Shell) Collins, Jenna Ellis; eight great-grandchildren, Passion Matia Collins, Autionna Kay Collins, Savyon Cordova, Kynnick Ellis, Jeff Whiten, Mike Whiten, Haley Vanderburg, Mya Vanderburg; several nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Sandra Harvey.

She was born March 20, 1919 near Lake Wapello in Davis County, Iowa to Eli Jr. and Ara Ann Bridgeman Smith. She met Walter Max Cantrell while he was working at the C.C. Camp at Lake Wapello and the couple married on July 10, 1937 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Walter passed away on December 21, 1989.

Blanche was an excellent cook and always made sure that guests would never leave the house hungry. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, and listening to Elvis Pressley. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.

She is survived by eight children, Kenneth (Barbara) Cantrell of Drakesville, Iowa, Beverly (Russell) Forsythe, Paul Dean (Connie) Cantrell both of Bloomfield, Donald (Merry) Cantrell of Illinois City, Illinois, Lonnie (Renee) Cantrell of Oelwein, Iowa, Phillip (Donna) Cantrell of Fruitland, Iowa, Bonnie (Fred) Pittman of Newton, Iowa, Rollie (Nancy) Cantrell of Marion, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Freda Huff.

Irene worked as a CNA at the Davis County Hospital for 21 years. In her free time, she enjoyed being around her family and playing poker with her friends. Her favorite variation of poker was Peek-a-Boo Poker.

Sharon graduated from the nursing program at Indian Hills in 2012 and was employed at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa. She was currently working towards becoming a nurse practitioner through courses offered by Walden University. Her long-term goal was to serve others on medical mission trips to Jamaica. Sharon was a very giving person with a big heart. She was a member of Christ’s Church in Ottumwa, the Christian Motorcycle Association, and the Patriot Guard. She loved to tinker around with things and was a huge Green Bay Packers fan.

She is survived by her husband, John Eakins of Ottumwa; four daughters, Ashlee Post, Nichole Hipshur both of Ottumwa, Crystal Noble of Louisville, Mississippi, Mary Lou-Ann Johnson of Newton, Mississippi; granddaughter, Sarah Johnson; great-granddaughter, Alayna Rue; mother, Pauline Post of Floris, Iowa; two sisters, twin Karen Post, Lora (Mike) Diedrick both of Ottumwa; two brothers, George (Becky) Post III, John Post both of Ottumwa; numerous nieces and nephews; and her pride-and-joy-dog, Dakota.

He passed away on May 24, 2013. Christene worked as secretary of plant operations at the Ottumwa Hospital for 32 years. She was a member of Christ’s Church in Ottumwa.

Christene loved all kinds of music, especially Blue Grass. She could play the piano, guitar, and banjo and would often do so for her family. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, growing flowers, and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed helping older folks in the community, often times at her own expense. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Donald (Joy) Bell of Bloomfield; three daughters, Linda Hawkins of Fort Madison, Iowa, Shari (Dave) Rupe, Rose (Charles) Bean both of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Hewitt, Alta (Larry) Swindler both of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews, six of whom she considered her honorary children, Kathy, Kenny, Roy Gene, Richard, Jim, and John.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert Lee Bell; and a sister, Beulah Marie Reisch.

Lois Jean Fitzgerald, 90, of Iowa City, Iowa passed away on April 26, 2017 with her family by her side at Legacy Pointe Assisted Living. She was born June 9, 1926 in Davis County, Iowa to Vernette A. and Elsie Mae Blackwell Altheide. She married Robert Fitzgerald on September 27, 1941. He passed away on September 2, 2012.

Lois lived most of her adult life in Davenport, Iowa. While raising six children she worked part-time in youth baseball. After her children were grown, Lois joined the staff of JC Penny where she worked for over 19 years as head of the drapery department. She retired in 1994.

Her hobbies included working with youth baseball, playing Bingo, following Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball, doing word puzzles, and reading. She especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and attending their activities.

She is survived by her children, Robert (Jan) Fitzgerald of Windemere, Florida, Gordon (Jerrie) Fitzgerald of Houma, Louisiana, Connie Brandon of Ballwin, Missouri, Douglas (Peggy) Fitzgerald of Iowa City, Michael (Ann) Fitzgerald of Des Moines, David (Marianne) Fitzgerald of Mt. Sinai, New York; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis (Dewitt) Shelton of Bloomfield, Iowa, Marlene Cook of Ottumwa, Iowa; and a brother, Don (Dee) Altheide of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Carol Fitzgerald; and a brother, Richard Altheide.

Evelyn Fern Spurgeon, 91, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away April 5, 2017 in Ottumwa. She was born June 9, 1925 in Davis County, Iowa to John and Hattie Faye Dixon Hanna. She married Vernon T. Spurgeon on January 19, 1941 in Bloomfield. He passed away on February 16, 2005. Evelyn was a talented artist and painter. She worked in Urbandale, Iowa for 15 years painting the faces of mannequins and also sold over 100 paintings throughout her life. She also enjoyed showing her paintings at the Davis County Art Show. She was active in church and had been attending the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by a son, Stuart Spurgeon of Toledo, Oregon; two daughters, LaVetta Schmied of Boynton Beach, Florida, Franrica Payne of Ottumwa, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Elmer Ashby; husband; granddaughter, Casey Schmied; two sisters, Dorothea Friend, Edna Latta; and a daughter-in-law, Christina Dolores Spurgeon.

Shirley E. Barker, 81, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away April 2, 2017 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born August 4, 1935 in Davis County, Iowa to Arthur Fenton Jr. and Lucille Rupe Fenton. She married Leon Barker on September 28, 1952 at the Bloomfield Christian Church. Leon passed away on June 12, 1992.

Shirley worked as a teacher’s aide for Sieda Head Start for nine years, ran an in-home daycare for 20 years, and then worked at the Cattle Palace in Bloomfield for almost two years. She was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons, Ron (Sandy) Barker of Columbia, Missouri, Roger (Karen) Barker of Osage Beach, Missouri; three grandchildren, Ryan (Jenny) Barker of Columbia, Missouri, Lauren Barker of Osage Beach, Keeley (Mark) Welsh of Davenport, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Spencer Welsh, Nolan Welsh; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two granddaughters, Stephanie Barker, Mindy Barker.

Stephen Allen Clark, 61, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away March 19, 2017 at his home. He was born September 7, 1955 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Donald Lee and Martha Mae Bales Clark. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1973. He married Cindy Robertson on September 12, 1998 at Lake Wapello.

Steve worked for Hormel in Ottumwa for many years and also served as a union steward. After Hormel, he owned and operated Clark S.A.W. Mill with his brother, Warren. Steve spent the last nine years working for John Deere in Ottumwa.

Steve enjoyed many activities in life; calf roping, hunting, fishing, playing baseball and fastpitch softball, and trap shooting. He was also a baseball coach and coached high school basketball for Davis County with his good friend, Nick Pace. He was a Pittsburg Steelers, Atlanta Braves, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League in Bloomfield.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Clark; two daughters, Crystal (Justin) Hopkins of Bloomfield, Mindy (TJ) Stalker of Creston, Iowa; three step-sons, Jamie (Penny) Collier of Brighton, Iowa, Jason (Lisa) Collier, Nathan (Nikki) Thordarson both of Bloomfield; 13 grandchildren; mother, Martha (Al Clark) Clark of Bloomfield; sister-in-law, Lynn Clark of Bloomfield; brother, Michael (Teri) Clark of Eldon; two nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Warren Clark.

Ina LaVelle Gleason, 104, of Bloomfield, Iowa went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. She was born on July 8, 1912 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Harley Gordner and Nellie Stogdill Edwards. She was united in marriage on March 14, 1931 to King Grant Gleason and they spent 53 happy years together until he passed away on January 26, 1984.

LaVelle was a housewife who belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge #1. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, gardening, and fishing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by a son, Keith (Sherri Sinclair) Gleason of Bloomfield; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Billy Gleason; daughter, Barbara Rominger; son-in-law, Joe Rominger; grandson, Billy Joe Rominger; and three sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Velma Black, and Lucille Munn.

Richard Blew, 70, of Ottumwa, Iowa passed away March 15, 2017 at the Iowa City VA Hospital. He was born March 9, 1947 in Wapello County, Iowa to Chastle and Helen Donaldson Blew. He married Rita Morrisette, she passed away in 2004.

Richard served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. He was a farmer and worked for the City of Ottumwa for many years. He enjoyed playing cards, riding motorcycles, country western dancing, and dressing up as Santa Claus for area nursing homes.

He is survived by a brother, Roger Blew of Glenwood, Missouri and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Carol Downing, 76, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away March 12, 2017 at her home. She was born December 17, 1940 in Carlinville, Illinois to Carl and Freda Broers Brueggeman. She married Darrell Downing August 11, 1973 in Edwardsville, Illinois.

As a young woman, Carol taught children of military service personnel in Germany and Japan for the Department of Defense. She then taught in Illinois and Iowa for 49 years, the last 10 for Moulton-Udell Schools.

Carol and Darrell moved to the farm in Davis County 18 years ago. With enthusiasm, she became part of the community by joining many organizations and helping with the Drakesville Reunion. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Orleans Church of Christ.

Carol could fill a room with her warmth just by walking it. She never met a stranger and had an adventurous nature throughout her life. She also had great affection and fondness for the many dogs, cats, and horses around the farm.

She is survived by her husband and three brothers, Jim (Whiff) Brueggeman of Sterling, Virginia, Raymond Brueggeman of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Barry (Cheryl) Brueggeman of Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sibling.

She was born on February 12, 1945 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Bernie and Audrey Goodson Rees. She lived most of her life in Bloomfield but spent a few years living with her sister, Zilpha Dunlavy, in Oklahoma. Frances was "Aunt Francie" to most of us. She was the light of all family gatherings and a joy to be around. Her amazing ability to be joyful in any situation was an example for us all. Her smile was so beautiful and she used it to make anyone around her smile too. Francie left us with many precious memories and our lives were enriched greatly because of her. She will be loved forever!

She is survived by her sister, Zilpha Dunlavy of Blakesburg, Iowa; nieces, Debbie Kulbeth and family of Olustee, Oklahoma, Julia Bennett and family of Bloomfield, Iowa, Deborah Lynne Dillow and family in Oregon, Laura McDonald and family of Blakesburg, Kelly Smith and family of Blakesburg; nephew Blake Roberts and family of Blair, Oklahoma; many great nieces and nephews; cousins; friends; and many that call her "Aunt Francie!"

She was born August 29, 1959 in Skagit Valley, Washington to Robert and Idella Joy Baxter Black. She married Reggie Guiter August 26, 1987 in Durango, Colorado. He passed away March 17, 2007. Sue worked for Davis County Schools in the Special Education Department and as a substitute teacher, retiring after 20 years of service. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary #775 and the Bloomfield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a special friend, Randy Duncan of Downing, Missouri; three sons, Zack Guiter, Mike (Sherri) Guiter both of Bloomfield, Iowa, Eric Duncan of Cottonwood, Arizona; daughter, Nicki (Nathan) Sayre of Downing, Missouri; six grandchildren, Clay and Cami Guiter, Carson, Carmella, and Logan Guiter, Emilee Sayre; brother, Mike Baxter Sr. of Ottumwa, Iowa; and two sisters, Myra (Russ) Ness of Centerville, Iowa, Marilyn (Tim) Ratliff of Bloomfield.

Olen Granvil Jarvis, 76, of Milton, Iowa passed away February 16, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born August 16, 1940 in Davis County, Iowa to James Isaac and Irene Larue Arnold Jarvis. He married Thelma Louise Dinges on July 9, 1964 in Oakland, California. Thelma passed away April 6, 1990. Olen served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He then worked as a welder for Cedar Rapids Steel until 1982 when he took a position at a plastic factory where he worked until retirement. Olen had lived in Milton for several years.

He is survived by a daughter, Karen Jarvis of Agency, Iowa; two brothers, Otto and Otis Jarvis both of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jessie, Cody, Felicia, and Summer; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Olen Jarvis Jr.; daughter, Irene Jarvis; four brothers; and one sister.

She was born September 11, 1920 in Washington, Iowa to Byrd Thomas and Ida Whiteside Piper. She married Donald McKinley “Max” Simmons on December 23, 1937 in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union three children were born; Donald LaVerne, Donna Lorene, and Ronald Marion. Max passed away on July 2, 1971.

Lorene was a homemaker, farmer, and combination truck drivers’ wife. She knew what it meant to take care of her family and also the farm chores. After Max passed away, she worked at the West Elementary School in Bloomfield as a kitchen and lunchroom worker, retiring in 1986. Lorene loved to travel, read books, watch funny television shows, and spend time with her family. She was a member of the Drakesville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three children, Donald (Janice) Simmons of Marshalltown, Iowa, Donna (Gary) Eaves of Drakesville, Ronald Simmons of Drakesville; four grandchildren, Julie Simmons of Ames, Iowa, Kathy Simmons of Urbana, Illinois, Brock (Jennifer) Simmons of Blakesburg, Iowa, Blake (Kaleigh) Simmons of Drakesville; four great-grandchildren, Douglas Pepe, Joshua (Angel) Pepe both of Ames, Iowa, Kobe Simmons of Drakesville, Jaxon Simmons of Blakesburg; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was born May 15, 1942 in Cleveland Township near Belknap in Davis County, Iowa to Harold Moses and Iva Mae Huffman Howk. He was a 1961 graduate of Davis County High School. On June 22, 1962, he married Patricia Joan Coop at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Benny worked for many area farmers, Duffield’s DX, Miller’s DX, Joe’s Sinclair, and then owned his own business, Ben’s DX. Benny and Pat opened the first Sears Merchant Catalog Store in Bloomfield in 1971. He then owned the True Value Store in Bloomfield for 32 years, retiring in 2004. While not working, Benny enjoyed being on the farm and camping. He attended the Ottumwa Baptist Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Howk; three children, Michael (Leah) Howk, Deborah (Tim) Batterson both of Bloomfield, Melissa (Dennis) Hayes of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; 14 grandchildren, Alyssa and Deni Hayes, Emily, Katie, Adam, and Benjamin Batterson, Rachel Hayes, Noah Batterson, Rebekah Hayes, Luke, Sarah, Justus, Titus, and Hope Batterson; three sisters, LaRue (Joe) Heaton of Kirksville, Missouri, Sharon (Kevin) Blasi, Vicki (Mark) Shively both of Bloomfield, Iowa; three brothers, Tom (Judy) Howk, Harry (Brenda) Howk both of Bloomfield, Dick Howk of West Grove, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jackie Ray Howk; and three sisters, Betty Sammons Ames, Sandra Luko, and Linda Blasi.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Travis Decker officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be given to Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties, Ottumwa Baptist Temple Printing Ministry, or the Davis County Genealogical Society.

Margaret Faye Williams, 78, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away January 18, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was born November 15, 1938 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Walter and Helen Carruthers Williams.

Margaret’s wish was to be cremated and burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date.

Victor Arnold McClure, 91, of Floris, Iowa passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. He was born June 14, 1925 in Wapello County, Iowa to Clyde D. and Millie Huffman McClure. He was a proud WWII veteran and after serving in the U.S. Navy, he married Leona Marie Talley on November 30, 1947. Leona passed away on October 27, 2013. Victor was a hard worker and held many different jobs throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered by many for his lightheartedness, positive attitude, and his many “War Stories.” He was a member of the Floris Baptist Church, Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, and the Oddfellows Lodge in Eldon, Iowa.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff and caregivers at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa for their care over the last three-and-a-half years. Victor called it “Home” and enjoyed joking with the staff who cared for him.

Left to tell his many stories are three children, Vicki Berardi of West Des Moines, Iowa, Phil (Sheila) McClure, Greg McClure both of Floris, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Patty Pearson of Eldon, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Connie (Larry) Birdsall of Ankeny, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 66 years, Leona; great-grandson, Dominic Clark; four brothers, Gail, Wallace, Fred, and Wayne McClure; a sister, Janice Chickering; and a son-in-law, Romeo Berardi.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Gordon Hawkins officiating. Burial with graveside military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 American Legion will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Clifford Leon “Lonnie” Benge Jr., 74, of Floris, Iowa passed away January 6, 2017 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born December 11, 1942 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Clifford Leon and Neva Brooks Benge Sr. He served in the United States Navy during Vietnam and worked as an over-the-road truck driver for many years. He married Judy Dickson on May 14, 1976 in Lancaster, Missouri. In his free time, Lonnie liked to go hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. He also enjoyed working on old cars and derby cars.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Benge of Floris; four sons, Jim, Darian, Robert, and Max Benge; five daughters, Andrea, Debbie, Julie, Amy, and Tammy; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four brothers, Larry, Bill, Tony, and Jim Benge; and three sisters, Cathy, Sue, and Jenifer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Larry Benge Jr.

Lonnie’s wish was to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Tommy Michael Jacobs, 59, of Bloomfield, Iowa went to be with his Lord on January 2, 2017. He was born June 1, 1957 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Don and Darlene Jacobs. He had several jobs during and after graduating from Davis County High School in 1975. However, he found his calling while working as an in-home aide for the elderly. He attended Indian Hills Community College and became an LPN. Tommy worked at the Bloomfield Care Center and for ResCare before sustaining an injury that cut his career short.

Unlike many in the nursing profession, Tom’s nurse found him to be a model patient, brave and never complaining. He suffered with cancer for several years and fought a brave fight. He was a loving and giving person, who will be greatly missed. Tommy enjoyed growing flowers, cooking, wildlife, rocks and birds of all kind.

He is survived by his parents, Don and Darlene Jacobs of Bloomfield, Iowa; two sisters, Dianne Stein of Marionville, Missouri, and Maggie Arnold of Bloomfield, Iowa; a brother, Chris Jacobs of Bloomfield, Iowa; three nephews, one niece, three great-nieces, and three great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; brother, David Wayne Jacobs and brother, Donald James Jacobs.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bloomfield with Pastor Tom Shipley officiating. Charles Alfred “Charlie” Rupe, 85, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on November 28, 2016 at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born June 15, 1931 in Newton, Iowa to Arlando and Lucille Miller Rupe. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1949 and served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He married Laverda Wilkinson on August 22, 1952 in Troy, Iowa. They were later divorced. He married Peggy Gutru on June 7, 1986 in Bloomfield. He worked as a salesman for Sidles in Centerville, Iowa for many years.

Charlie was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion for 63 years. He served as Commander from 2011-2013 and earned the Veteran of the Year Award in 2011. He was a charter member of the Bloomfield Optimist Club and earned the Friend of Youth Award in 2001. He was active in Little League Baseball as a coach, manager, and umpire. He served as district administrator at the local and state level of Little League. Charlie was also involved with Davis County High School Athletics, running the clock for many years for football games and as a referee for basketball games. His involvement with the High School earned him the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1997. He was also awarded the 1997 Davis County Citizen of the Year Award. Charlie was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Rupe; two sons, Stanley (Julie) Rupe of Corydon, Iowa, Stuart Rupe of Keosauqua, Iowa; daughter, Sheri (Gary) Sprouse of Bloomfield; step-daughter, Heidi (Scott) Newlon of Blue Springs, Missouri; six grandchildren, Shane (Jessica) Rupe, Rashawn (Bo) Irons, Chance (Amber) Rupe, Tanner (Karessa) Rupe, Zachary (Amber) Sprouse, Alyssa (Greg) Nelson; step-granddaughter, Kynser Newlon; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger Rupe, Gerald Rupe both of Bloomfield; and two sisters, Karen (Jim) Caraccio of West Des Moines, Iowa, Shirley Sines of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Eugene Rupe; and three sisters, Charlotte Rupe, Darlene Fry, Marilyn Shepard.

Carole Lynn Raskie, 60, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away November 19, 2016 at the Ottumwa Hospice House. She was born June 14, 1956 in Moorestown, New Jersey to Cornelius Neil and Henrietta Yesko Cook. She married Greg Raskie in January 1988 in Drakesville. Carole worked as a bartender at Ray’s Longbranch in Drakesville, as a manager for Dollar General in Centerville and Bloomfield, and later as a manager for U.S. Cellular in Bloomfield. She was an active member of the Drakesville United Methodist Church helping with Youth Group and other church activities. Carole was also a den mother for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. In her free time, she loved being with her grandchildren, crocheting, and playing softball when she was younger.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Chris (Melissa) Meeth of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Cliff Meeth of Bloomfield, Zach (Nicole) Raskie of Bloomfield; daughter, Abby Raskie of Bloomfield; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Joann (Russ) Harris of Bloomfield, Irma (Frank) Rios of Liberty, New York, Ruth (Dave) Brown of N. Carolina; and a brother, Ray (Lisa) Cook of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy Marie Blackwell, 99, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away November 17, 2016 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born May 29, 1917 in Davis County, Iowa to Clem and Carrie Martin York. She married Grant W. Blackwell on October 29, 1964 in Scotland County, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1979. Dorothy was a member of the Barker United Methodist Church and was active with the United Methodist Women, the Davis County Historical Society, and the Welcome Center in Bloomfield.

She is survived by a son, Bob (Linda Raines) Blackwell of Ottumwa, Iowa; four daughters, Sandy (Phil Herteen) McCarthy of Milton, Iowa, Joan Hicks of Henderson, Nevada, Linda Cohrt of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Nancy (Rollie) Cantrell of Marion, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Donald, John, and Beverly Pitman; grandson, Eric Cohrt; four brothers, Sylvester, Max, Joe, and Dickie York; two sisters, Gladys Vaught, Beulah Stockham; sons-in-law, Vince McCarthy, Darwin Cohrt; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Blackwell.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Barker Cemetery in Scotland County, Missouri. The family will be present to greet friends on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield before proceeding to the cemetery for services. Memorials have been established to the North Barker Cemetery Association and Hospice of Mahaska County.
