Dr. Alan W. Gravett, 60, of Ottumwa, Iowa went into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 8th, 2017. Alan was born on November 27, 1956 in El Paso, Texas to Doran and Roberta Owens Gravett. He married Donna Barbara Susan Smith on April 27, 1991.

Alan graduated from Davis County High School in 1975. He went on to get his medical degree at the University of Iowa and received board certification in emergency medicine. He also had degrees in occupational and sports medicine.

Alan was a fun and loving man, husband, father, son, and brother. He started a cattle farm operation in Davis County and helped raise five beautiful children in Illinois while dedicating his life to, with all his heart, taking care of his family and others.

He was kind, funny, and helpful to everyone and held a passion for learning, football, forestry, and world history.

Alan worked as a physician in various emergency rooms across Illinois, Iowa, and northern Missouri, saving countless lives throughout his career. He was diligently researching in hopes of finding new treatments for cancer.

He is preceded in death by his father, Doran Gravett.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; five children, Amber, Cody, Nick, Dylan, and Abby; mother, Roberta; brother, Brian (Debbie) Gravett; two sisters, Lynn (Pete) Roers, Renee (Michael) Michaud; three brothers-in-law, Allen (Wendy) Smith, Michael (Sue) Smith, John Smith; three sisters-in-law, Lori (Steven) Kennedy, Sandy Smith, Marian (Gary) Lagerstrom; niece Kasey Heldrich; and two nephews, Andrew and Joseph Heldrich.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Mike Evans officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at the Sunset View Cemetery near Moulton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday with the family present to greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to any animal shelter or Tenco Industries.

Treva Cox, 65, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 20, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born January 10, 1952 near Belknap, Iowa to LaVerne and Mildred Marie Bolin Baker. She married Richard Cox on June 28, 2011 in Lancaster, Missouri.

Treva worked at the Davis County Hospital from 1982 - 1995. She started in the kitchen and eventually moved to the respiratory therapy department. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, canning, and being on the family farm. When she was younger she attended Christ’s Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by her husband; brother, Tracy (Joan) Baker of Ottumwa; three sisters, Tamra Deevers, Trudy (Robert) Major both of Albia, Iowa, Tess (Jon) Moore of Humphreys, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Graveside services with burial of the cremated remains will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Rev. Donna Olinger will officiate. No visitation is planned.

Dorothy D. Pirtle, 93, of Moberly, Missouri and former resident of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 13, 2017 at her home. She was born September 19, 1923 in Moulton, Iowa to Otis and Ella Mae Randolph Davis. She married Carl Pirtle on August 16, 1941 in Kirksville, Missouri. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and was always proud of the jewelry he spoiled her with. Carl passed away on October 20, 2009.

Dorothy and her twin sister, Doris, were the best of friends and were always together. They shared a special bond that will be reunited in heaven as Doris has been waiting for Dorothy since December 5, 2014. Dorothy will greet her sister with a smile, painted fingernails, and probably a Diet Coke or R.C. Cola in hand, just like in life.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Pirtle of Moberly, Missouri; daughter, Janice (Cliff) Bierwagen of Gilbert, Arizona; four grandchildren, Rhonda Wright, Peggy Taylor, Kimberly Wegner, Christopher Wegner; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Peterson, Megan Wright, and Riley Zinnert; and a great-great-grandson on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers; and two sisters.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Rev. Jack Knox officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 10-11:15 a.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Esther Lorene Smith, 99, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 13, 2017 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born June 18, 1917 in Bladensburg, Iowa to Jay Benjamin and Jennie Garber Reno. She married Henry Clay Smith on December 6, 1940 in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1968.

Esther worked in housekeeping at the Davis County Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1980. While active in the community she was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary in Bloomfield and the Floris Christian Church. She was a lifetime resident of Davis County.

She is survived by a daughter, Carrie (Mike) Crane of Selma, Iowa; son, Kelley (Launa) Smith of Long Grove, Illinois; three grandchildren, Greg (Arlynne) Smith of Palatine, Illinois, Mark (Eunyi) Smith of Huntington Woods, Michigan, Becky (Steve) Storckman of Round Lake, Illinois; five great-grandchildren, Claire and Holly Smith, Evan Smith, Charlotte and Kurt Storckman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers; and a sister.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Jack Knox officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Iva Dell Roberts, 85, of Troy, Iowa passed away May 11, 2017 at her home. She was born March 14, 1932 in Van Buren County, Iowa to Leo H. and Clara A. Zeitler Law. She married Earl “Hickory” Roberts on April 1, 1950 in Centerville, Iowa. The couple ran the Troy Store together from 1978 – 1990. Earl passed away on the same day 22 years ago, May 11, 1995.

Iva Dell lived in the Troy area all of her life. She loved to visit with people and enjoyed a fun argument when she thought she was right. If anyone had a question about Troy history, Iva Dell was the person to ask. She loved living on the farm and was one of the hardest working women you could ever meet. While she was away from work, she enjoyed being outside fishing, mowing the grass, listening to the birds, and working with cattle. She also enjoyed making afghans, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching soap operas and old westerns. Iva Dell loved her kids dearly and was happy to spend time with all of them. She will be greatly missed and dearly remembered.

She is survived by three children, Dennis Roberts of Eldon, Iowa, Mike (Danita) Roberts of Bloomfield, Carol (Dewey) Coatney of Troy; five grandchildren, Thomas Roberts, Jenni Roberts, Alissa (Joey) Swarts, Troy Roberts, Trisha (Casey) Keim; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lillian Ritz of Bloomfield, Lovetta Jarvis of Troy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Jerry Lee Roberts; infant brother, Richard Law; and a close friend, Bill Jones.

Larry Allan Collins, 77, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 6, 2017 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa. He was born September 26, 1939 in Springfield, Illinois to James and Martha Montgomery Collins. He married Karol Kimball September 18, 1965 in Bloomfield. Karol passed away January 22, 2015.

Larry served in the United States Navy after graduating from high school in Illinois. After the Navy, he worked for the City of Ottumwa for a few years before getting hired at John Deere Ottumwa Works. He would later transfer to the Waterloo John Deere Plant until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he owned and operated the “Collins Café” with his wife for 10 years. The café was located in the Ballingall Hotel in Ottumwa.

Larry enjoyed early morning coffee with his “Coffee Club.” He also enjoyed going out to eat with friends, fishing, spending time with family, and swinging by the Can-Dough Redemption Center in Ottumwa to pester his daughter, Leanna.

He is survived by his twin daughters, Leanna (Amy Vanderburg) Collins of Ottumwa, Deanna Collins of Bloomfield; two grandchildren, Joe (Shell) Collins, Jenna Ellis; eight great-grandchildren, Passion Matia Collins, Autionna Kay Collins, Savyon Cordova, Kynnick Ellis, Jeff Whiten, Mike Whiten, Haley Vanderburg, Mya Vanderburg; several nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Sandra Harvey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Givonni Reye Cordova; two brothers, Mike and Jim Collins; and a sister, Linda Huff.

Blanche LaRue Cantrell, 98, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 6, 2017 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born March 20, 1919 near Lake Wapello in Davis County, Iowa to Eli Jr. and Ara Ann Bridgeman Smith. She met Walter Max Cantrell while he was working at the C.C. Camp at Lake Wapello and the couple married on July 10, 1937 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Walter passed away on December 21, 1989.

Blanche was an excellent cook and always made sure that guests would never leave the house hungry. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, and listening to Elvis Pressley. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.

She is survived by eight children, Kenneth (Barbara) Cantrell of Drakesville, Iowa, Beverly (Russell) Forsythe, Paul Dean (Connie) Cantrell both of Bloomfield, Donald (Merry) Cantrell of Illinois City, Illinois, Lonnie (Renee) Cantrell of Oelwein, Iowa, Phillip (Donna) Cantrell of Fruitland, Iowa, Bonnie (Fred) Pittman of Newton, Iowa, Rollie (Nancy) Cantrell of Marion, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Freda Huff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter-in-law, Shari Forsythe; two brothers, Alva Smith, infant Rosco Smith; and five sisters, Ruth Doll, Elsie Coop, Ora Smith, Beaulah Smith, and infant Virgie Smith.

Eva Irene Hougland, 79, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away May 6, 2017 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa. She was born December 17, 1937 in Bloomfield to Fernando and Dorothy Van Horn Tharp. She married Robert Hougland on January 16, 1954 in Bloomfield. He passed away on May 31, 2011.

Irene worked as a CNA at the Davis County Hospital for 21 years. In her free time, she enjoyed being around her family and playing poker with her friends. Her favorite variation of poker was Peek-a-Boo Poker.

She is survived by three sons, Robert (Kris) Hougland Jr., Raymond (Linda) Hougland both of Bloomfield, Rick (Debbie) Hougland of Auburn, Georgia; three daughters, Cheri (Steve) Spurgeon of Moulton, Iowa, Becky (Bill) Lunsford of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Sheila (Phil) McClure of Floris, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet (Dick) Meyers of Iberia, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two grandchildren, Jerry Hougland, Jackie Spurgeon; four brothers, Donald, Richard, Charles, and Jerry Tharp; and three sisters, Helen Ritz, Mary Pickens and infant Hazel Marie Tharp.

Sharon “Pokey” Eakins, 46, of Ottumwa, Iowa went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2017. She was born May 21, 1970 in Iowa City to George Jr. and Pauline Rhoads Post. She married John Eakins on June 8, 2007 at Christ’s Church in Ottumwa.

Sharon graduated from the nursing program at Indian Hills in 2012 and was employed at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa. She was currently working towards becoming a nurse practitioner through courses offered by Walden University. Her long-term goal was to serve others on medical mission trips to Jamaica. Sharon was a very giving person with a big heart. She was a member of Christ’s Church in Ottumwa, the Christian Motorcycle Association, and the Patriot Guard. She loved to tinker around with things and was a huge Green Bay Packers fan.

She is survived by her husband, John Eakins of Ottumwa; four daughters, Ashlee Post, Nichole Hipshur both of Ottumwa, Crystal Noble of Louisville, Mississippi, Mary Lou-Ann Johnson of Newton, Mississippi; granddaughter, Sarah Johnson; great-granddaughter, Alayna Rue; mother, Pauline Post of Floris, Iowa; two sisters, twin Karen Post, Lora (Mike) Diedrick both of Ottumwa; two brothers, George (Becky) Post III, John Post both of Ottumwa; numerous nieces and nephews; and her pride-and-joy-dog, Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her father; infant sister, Kimberly Post; and a great-niece, Donna Irene Rose Jean Rachford.

Edna Christene Bell, 83, of Ottumwa, Iowa and former resident of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away April 29, 2017 at the Hospice House in Ottumwa. She was born June 20, 1933 in Union Township in Davis County, Iowa to Ira Ellison and Grace Ellen Thomas Reisch. She married Robert Bell on June 10, 1951 in Davis County, Iowa. He passed away on May 24, 2013. Christene worked as secretary of plant operations at the Ottumwa Hospital for 32 years. She was a member of Christ’s Church in Ottumwa.

Christene loved all kinds of music, especially Blue Grass. She could play the piano, guitar, and banjo and would often do so for her family. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, growing flowers, and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed helping older folks in the community, often times at her own expense. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Donald (Joy) Bell of Bloomfield; three daughters, Linda Hawkins of Fort Madison, Iowa, Shari (Dave) Rupe, Rose (Charles) Bean both of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Hewitt, Alta (Larry) Swindler both of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews, six of whom she considered her honorary children, Kathy, Kenny, Roy Gene, Richard, Jim, and John.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert Lee Bell; and a sister, Beulah Marie Reisch.

Lois Jean Fitzgerald, 90, of Iowa City, Iowa passed away on April 26, 2017 with her family by her side at Legacy Pointe Assisted Living. She was born June 9, 1926 in Davis County, Iowa to Vernette A. and Elsie Mae Blackwell Altheide. She married Robert Fitzgerald on September 27, 1941. He passed away on September 2, 2012.

Lois lived most of her adult life in Davenport, Iowa. While raising six children she worked part-time in youth baseball. After her children were grown, Lois joined the staff of JC Penny where she worked for over 19 years as head of the drapery department. She retired in 1994.

Her hobbies included working with youth baseball, playing Bingo, following Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball, doing word puzzles, and reading. She especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and attending their activities.

She is survived by her children, Robert (Jan) Fitzgerald of Windemere, Florida, Gordon (Jerrie) Fitzgerald of Houma, Louisiana, Connie Brandon of Ballwin, Missouri, Douglas (Peggy) Fitzgerald of Iowa City, Michael (Ann) Fitzgerald of Des Moines, David (Marianne) Fitzgerald of Mt. Sinai, New York; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis (Dewitt) Shelton of Bloomfield, Iowa, Marlene Cook of Ottumwa, Iowa; and a brother, Don (Dee) Altheide of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Carol Fitzgerald; and a brother, Richard Altheide.

Evelyn Fern Spurgeon, 91, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away April 5, 2017 in Ottumwa. She was born June 9, 1925 in Davis County, Iowa to John and Hattie Faye Dixon Hanna. She married Vernon T. Spurgeon on January 19, 1941 in Bloomfield. He passed away on February 16, 2005. Evelyn was a talented artist and painter. She worked in Urbandale, Iowa for 15 years painting the faces of mannequins and also sold over 100 paintings throughout her life. She also enjoyed showing her paintings at the Davis County Art Show. She was active in church and had been attending the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bloomfield.

She is survived by a son, Stuart Spurgeon of Toledo, Oregon; two daughters, LaVetta Schmied of Boynton Beach, Florida, Franrica Payne of Ottumwa, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Elmer Ashby; husband; granddaughter, Casey Schmied; two sisters, Dorothea Friend, Edna Latta; and a daughter-in-law, Christina Dolores Spurgeon.

Shirley E. Barker, 81, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away April 2, 2017 at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born August 4, 1935 in Davis County, Iowa to Arthur Fenton Jr. and Lucille Rupe Fenton. She married Leon Barker on September 28, 1952 at the Bloomfield Christian Church. Leon passed away on June 12, 1992.

Shirley worked as a teacher’s aide for Sieda Head Start for nine years, ran an in-home daycare for 20 years, and then worked at the Cattle Palace in Bloomfield for almost two years. She was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons, Ron (Sandy) Barker of Columbia, Missouri, Roger (Karen) Barker of Osage Beach, Missouri; three grandchildren, Ryan (Jenny) Barker of Columbia, Missouri, Lauren Barker of Osage Beach, Keeley (Mark) Welsh of Davenport, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Spencer Welsh, Nolan Welsh; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two granddaughters, Stephanie Barker, Mindy Barker.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Cremation will follow the visitation and burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date at the Troy Cemetery. Stephen Allen Clark, 61, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away March 19, 2017 at his home. He was born September 7, 1955 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Donald Lee and Martha Mae Bales Clark. He graduated from Davis County High School in 1973. He married Cindy Robertson on September 12, 1998 at Lake Wapello.

Steve worked for Hormel in Ottumwa for many years and also served as a union steward. After Hormel, he owned and operated Clark S.A.W. Mill with his brother, Warren. Steve spent the last nine years working for John Deere in Ottumwa.

Steve enjoyed many activities in life; calf roping, hunting, fishing, playing baseball and fastpitch softball, and trap shooting. He was also a baseball coach and coached high school basketball for Davis County with his good friend, Nick Pace. He was a Pittsburg Steelers, Atlanta Braves, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League in Bloomfield.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Clark; two daughters, Crystal (Justin) Hopkins of Bloomfield, Mindy (TJ) Stalker of Creston, Iowa; three step-sons, Jamie (Penny) Collier of Brighton, Iowa, Jason (Lisa) Collier, Nathan (Nikki) Thordarson both of Bloomfield; 13 grandchildren; mother, Martha (Al Clark) Clark of Bloomfield; sister-in-law, Lynn Clark of Bloomfield; brother, Michael (Teri) Clark of Eldon; two nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Warren Clark.

Ina LaVelle Gleason, 104, of Bloomfield, Iowa went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. She was born on July 8, 1912 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Harley Gordner and Nellie Stogdill Edwards. She was united in marriage on March 14, 1931 to King Grant Gleason and they spent 53 happy years together until he passed away on January 26, 1984.

LaVelle was a housewife who belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge #1. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, gardening, and fishing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by a son, Keith (Sherri Sinclair) Gleason of Bloomfield; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Billy Gleason; daughter, Barbara Rominger; son-in-law, Joe Rominger; grandson, Billy Joe Rominger; and three sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Velma Black, and Lucille Munn.

Richard Blew, 70, of Ottumwa, Iowa passed away March 15, 2017 at the Iowa City VA Hospital. He was born March 9, 1947 in Wapello County, Iowa to Chastle and Helen Donaldson Blew. He married Rita Morrisette, she passed away in 2004.

Richard served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. He was a farmer and worked for the City of Ottumwa for many years. He enjoyed playing cards, riding motorcycles, country western dancing, and dressing up as Santa Claus for area nursing homes.

He is survived by a brother, Roger Blew of Glenwood, Missouri and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Richard’s wish was to be cremated. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Carol Downing, 76, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away March 12, 2017 at her home. She was born December 17, 1940 in Carlinville, Illinois to Carl and Freda Broers Brueggeman. She married Darrell Downing August 11, 1973 in Edwardsville, Illinois.

As a young woman, Carol taught children of military service personnel in Germany and Japan for the Department of Defense. She then taught in Illinois and Iowa for 49 years, the last 10 for Moulton-Udell Schools.

Carol and Darrell moved to the farm in Davis County 18 years ago. With enthusiasm, she became part of the community by joining many organizations and helping with the Drakesville Reunion. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Orleans Church of Christ.

Carol could fill a room with her warmth just by walking it. She never met a stranger and had an adventurous nature throughout her life. She also had great affection and fondness for the many dogs, cats, and horses around the farm.

She is survived by her husband and three brothers, Jim (Whiff) Brueggeman of Sterling, Virginia, Raymond Brueggeman of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Barry (Cheryl) Brueggeman of Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sibling.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Jerry Weller officiating. Burial will be at the Drakesville Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday with Eastern Star services at 5:00 p.m. followed by family visitation until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mavis Nadine Richmond, 76, of Moulton, Iowa passed away March 10, 2017 at her home. She was born June 21, 1940 in Davis County, Iowa to Ralph C. and Wilma M. Starr Mitchell. She married Henry Louis Richmond September 5, 1969 in Lubbock, Texas. He passed away August 11, 2009. Nadine was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters, Renee Larson of Bloomfield, Iowa, Denee Almy of Moulton, Lauretta (Miles) Johnston of Vancouver, Washington; son, Joel (Carrie) Richmond of Blakesburg, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Carl Larson, Floyd (Amy) Larson, Robert (Sarah) Howard, Lawrence (Laura) Howard, Telina (Casey) Almy, Jason Almy, Randie Richmond, Ryan Richmond, Adeline Johnston, Clara Johnston; 12 great-grandchildren, Daniel, Caitlin, Christa, Little Lawrence, Callie, Jacob, Christopher, Noah, Cassandra, Baby Casey, Maggie, Megan; brother, Gerald (Fern) Mitchell; sister-in-law, Jean Mitchell; and nieces and nephews, Cody, Jessie, and Teresa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, James Mitchell; and three nephews, Danny Mitchell, Sammy Mitchell, and Junior Jarvis.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield. The family will be present to greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. that evening.

Frances Rees, 72, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society - Ottumwa. She was born on February 12, 1945 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Bernie and Audrey Goodson Rees. She lived most of her life in Bloomfield but spent a few years living with her sister, Zilpha Dunlavy, in Oklahoma. Frances was "Aunt Francie" to most of us. She was the light of all family gatherings and a joy to be around. Her amazing ability to be joyful in any situation was an example for us all. Her smile was so beautiful and she used it to make anyone around her smile too. Francie left us with many precious memories and our lives were enriched greatly because of her. She will be loved forever!

She is survived by her sister, Zilpha Dunlavy of Blakesburg, Iowa; nieces, Debbie Kulbeth and family of Olustee, Oklahoma, Julia Bennett and family of Bloomfield, Iowa, Deborah Lynne Dillow and family in Oregon, Laura McDonald and family of Blakesburg, Kelly Smith and family of Blakesburg; nephew Blake Roberts and family of Blair, Oklahoma; many great nieces and nephews; cousins; friends; and many that call her "Aunt Francie!"

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother in-law, Charles Dunlavy; and many relatives and friends that awaited her in Heaven.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Bethel Cemetery in Davis County with several family members officiating. No visitation is planned.

Susan Guiter, 57, of Downing, Missouri and former resident of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away February 27, 2017 at her home. She was born August 29, 1959 in Skagit Valley, Washington to Robert and Idella Joy Baxter Black. She married Reggie Guiter August 26, 1987 in Durango, Colorado. He passed away March 17, 2007. Sue worked for Davis County Schools in the Special Education Department and as a substitute teacher, retiring after 20 years of service. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary #775 and the Bloomfield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a special friend, Randy Duncan of Downing, Missouri; three sons, Zack Guiter, Mike (Sherri) Guiter both of Bloomfield, Iowa, Eric Duncan of Cottonwood, Arizona; daughter, Nicki (Nathan) Sayre of Downing, Missouri; six grandchildren, Clay and Cami Guiter, Carson, Carmella, and Logan Guiter, Emilee Sayre; brother, Mike Baxter Sr. of Ottumwa, Iowa; and two sisters, Myra (Russ) Ness of Centerville, Iowa, Marilyn (Tim) Ratliff of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Robert Black Jr.; and sister, Laura Laumeyer.

A graveside celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Rev. Tim Frasher officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow services. No visitation is planned. A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield United Methodist Church Youth Group to assist with mission trips.

Olen Granvil Jarvis, 76, of Milton, Iowa passed away February 16, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born August 16, 1940 in Davis County, Iowa to James Isaac and Irene Larue Arnold Jarvis. He married Thelma Louise Dinges on July 9, 1964 in Oakland, California. Thelma passed away April 6, 1990. Olen served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He then worked as a welder for Cedar Rapids Steel until 1982 when he took a position at a plastic factory where he worked until retirement. Olen had lived in Milton for several years.

He is survived by a daughter, Karen Jarvis of Agency, Iowa; two brothers, Otto and Otis Jarvis both of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jessie, Cody, Felicia, and Summer; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Olen Jarvis Jr.; daughter, Irene Jarvis; four brothers; and one sister.

Wilma Jane Gay, 93, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away February 11, 2017 at Ridgewood Special Care in Ottumwa. She was born July 8, 1923 in Wapello County, Iowa to Ernest and Emma Simmons Blew. She married Edwin Gay on June 6, 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri. Edwin passed away on December 1, 1985. Wilma was a farm wife.

She is survived by a son, Edwin (Linda) Gay Jr. of Tumtum, Washington; daughter, Darlene (Charles) Scott of Ottumwa, Iowa; four grandchildren, John Wesley Gay, Randy Scott, Linda Scott, Edwin Gay II; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Chastle, Van, and Darrell Blew; and six sisters, Norma Jean Swaim, Doris Stogdill, Marlene Pilcher, Joleen Brookhart, Beatrice Cormeny, and Seletha Wilbanks.

Birdie Lorene Simmons, 96, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away February 10, 2017 in her home with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. She was born September 11, 1920 in Washington, Iowa to Byrd Thomas and Ida Whiteside Piper. She married Donald McKinley “Max” Simmons on December 23, 1937 in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union three children were born; Donald LaVerne, Donna Lorene, and Ronald Marion. Max passed away on July 2, 1971.

Lorene was a homemaker, farmer, and combination truck drivers’ wife. She knew what it meant to take care of her family and also the farm chores. After Max passed away, she worked at the West Elementary School in Bloomfield as a kitchen and lunchroom worker, retiring in 1986. Lorene loved to travel, read books, watch funny television shows, and spend time with her family. She was a member of the Drakesville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three children, Donald (Janice) Simmons of Marshalltown, Iowa, Donna (Gary) Eaves of Drakesville, Ronald Simmons of Drakesville; four grandchildren, Julie Simmons of Ames, Iowa, Kathy Simmons of Urbana, Illinois, Brock (Jennifer) Simmons of Blakesburg, Iowa, Blake (Kaleigh) Simmons of Drakesville; four great-grandchildren, Douglas Pepe, Joshua (Angel) Pepe both of Ames, Iowa, Kobe Simmons of Drakesville, Jaxon Simmons of Blakesburg; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Fred, Charlie, and Paul Piper; sister, Irene Fisk; and one grandchild.

Ralph Richard “Rick” Snow, 70, of Corydon, Iowa passed away February 7, 2017 at his home. He was born January 8, 1947 in Kirksville, Missouri to Ralph Junior and Dorothy Marguerite Rouse Snow. He married JoAnna Sue Ayer on July 7, 1969. Rick served in the U.S. Army for 2 years and spent most of his life as a self-employed mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnna; five sons, Rick Lee Snow of Anamosa, Billy (Anita) Snow of Ottumwa, Bobby Snow, Tommy Snow both of Corydon, Ronny (Shannon) Snow of Allerton, Iowa; daughter, Christina (Kevin) Snow of Allerton; four grandchildren, Kelsie, Hope, Star, and Richard; four brothers, Kenny, Jerry, Ivan, and Lessley; four sisters, Rita, Carolyn, Connie, Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Herbert Gene, Norman, and Roy.

Benny Harrison Howk, 74, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away January 20, 2017 at his home. He was born May 15, 1942 in Cleveland Township near Belknap in Davis County, Iowa to Harold Moses and Iva Mae Huffman Howk. He was a 1961 graduate of Davis County High School. On June 22, 1962, he married Patricia Joan Coop at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Benny worked for many area farmers, Duffield’s DX, Miller’s DX, Joe’s Sinclair, and then owned his own business, Ben’s DX. Benny and Pat opened the first Sears Merchant Catalog Store in Bloomfield in 1971. He then owned the True Value Store in Bloomfield for 32 years, retiring in 2004. While not working, Benny enjoyed being on the farm and camping. He attended the Ottumwa Baptist Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Howk; three children, Michael (Leah) Howk, Deborah (Tim) Batterson both of Bloomfield, Melissa (Dennis) Hayes of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; 14 grandchildren, Alyssa and Deni Hayes, Emily, Katie, Adam, and Benjamin Batterson, Rachel Hayes, Noah Batterson, Rebekah Hayes, Luke, Sarah, Justus, Titus, and Hope Batterson; three sisters, LaRue (Joe) Heaton of Kirksville, Missouri, Sharon (Kevin) Blasi, Vicki (Mark) Shively both of Bloomfield, Iowa; three brothers, Tom (Judy) Howk, Harry (Brenda) Howk both of Bloomfield, Dick Howk of West Grove, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Jackie Ray Howk; and three sisters, Betty Sammons Ames, Sandra Luko, and Linda Blasi.

Victor Arnold McClure, 91, of Floris, Iowa passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. He was born June 14, 1925 in Wapello County, Iowa to Clyde D. and Millie Huffman McClure. He was a proud WWII veteran and after serving in the U.S. Navy, he married Leona Marie Talley on November 30, 1947. Leona passed away on October 27, 2013. Victor was a hard worker and held many different jobs throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered by many for his lightheartedness, positive attitude, and his many “War Stories.” He was a member of the Floris Baptist Church, Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, and the Oddfellows Lodge in Eldon, Iowa.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff and caregivers at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa for their care over the last three-and-a-half years. Victor called it “Home” and enjoyed joking with the staff who cared for him.

Clifford Leon “Lonnie” Benge Jr., 74, of Floris, Iowa passed away January 6, 2017 at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield. He was born December 11, 1942 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Clifford Leon and Neva Brooks Benge Sr. He served in the United States Navy during Vietnam and worked as an over-the-road truck driver for many years. He married Judy Dickson on May 14, 1976 in Lancaster, Missouri. In his free time, Lonnie liked to go hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. He also enjoyed working on old cars and derby cars.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Benge of Floris; four sons, Jim, Darian, Robert, and Max Benge; five daughters, Andrea, Debbie, Julie, Amy, and Tammy; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four brothers, Larry, Bill, Tony, and Jim Benge; and three sisters, Cathy, Sue, and Jenifer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Larry Benge Jr.

Lonnie’s wish was to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Tommy Michael Jacobs, 59, of Bloomfield, Iowa went to be with his Lord on January 2, 2017. He was born June 1, 1957 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Don and Darlene Jacobs. He had several jobs during and after graduating from Davis County High School in 1975. However, he found his calling while working as an in-home aide for the elderly. He attended Indian Hills Community College and became an LPN. Tommy worked at the Bloomfield Care Center and for ResCare before sustaining an injury that cut his career short.

Unlike many in the nursing profession, Tom’s nurse found him to be a model patient, brave and never complaining. He suffered with cancer for several years and fought a brave fight. He was a loving and giving person, who will be greatly missed. Tommy enjoyed growing flowers, cooking, wildlife, rocks and birds of all kind.

He is survived by his parents, Don and Darlene Jacobs of Bloomfield, Iowa; two sisters, Dianne Stein of Marionville, Missouri, and Maggie Arnold of Bloomfield, Iowa; a brother, Chris Jacobs of Bloomfield, Iowa; three nephews, one niece, three great-nieces, and three great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; brother, David Wayne Jacobs and brother, Donald James Jacobs.

Charles Alfred “Charlie” Rupe, 85, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on November 28, 2016 at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born June 15, 1931 in Newton, Iowa to Arlando and Lucille Miller Rupe. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1949 and served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He married Laverda Wilkinson on August 22, 1952 in Troy, Iowa. They were later divorced. He married Peggy Gutru on June 7, 1986 in Bloomfield. He worked as a salesman for Sidles in Centerville, Iowa for many years.

Charlie was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion for 63 years. He served as Commander from 2011-2013 and earned the Veteran of the Year Award in 2011. He was a charter member of the Bloomfield Optimist Club and earned the Friend of Youth Award in 2001. He was active in Little League Baseball as a coach, manager, and umpire. He served as district administrator at the local and state level of Little League. Charlie was also involved with Davis County High School Athletics, running the clock for many years for football games and as a referee for basketball games. His involvement with the High School earned him the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1997. He was also awarded the 1997 Davis County Citizen of the Year Award. Charlie was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Rupe; two sons, Stanley (Julie) Rupe of Corydon, Iowa, Stuart Rupe of Keosauqua, Iowa; daughter, Sheri (Gary) Sprouse of Bloomfield; step-daughter, Heidi (Scott) Newlon of Blue Springs, Missouri; six grandchildren, Shane (Jessica) Rupe, Rashawn (Bo) Irons, Chance (Amber) Rupe, Tanner (Karessa) Rupe, Zachary (Amber) Sprouse, Alyssa (Greg) Nelson; step-granddaughter, Kynser Newlon; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger Rupe, Gerald Rupe both of Bloomfield; and two sisters, Karen (Jim) Caraccio of West Des Moines, Iowa, Shirley Sines of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Eugene Rupe; and three sisters, Charlotte Rupe, Darlene Fry, Marilyn Shepard.

Carole Lynn Raskie, 60, of Drakesville, Iowa passed away November 19, 2016 at the Ottumwa Hospice House. She was born June 14, 1956 in Moorestown, New Jersey to Cornelius Neil and Henrietta Yesko Cook. She married Greg Raskie in January 1988 in Drakesville. Carole worked as a bartender at Ray’s Longbranch in Drakesville, as a manager for Dollar General in Centerville and Bloomfield, and later as a manager for U.S. Cellular in Bloomfield. She was an active member of the Drakesville United Methodist Church helping with Youth Group and other church activities. Carole was also a den mother for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. In her free time, she loved being with her grandchildren, crocheting, and playing softball when she was younger.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Chris (Melissa) Meeth of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Cliff Meeth of Bloomfield, Zach (Nicole) Raskie of Bloomfield; daughter, Abby Raskie of Bloomfield; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Joann (Russ) Harris of Bloomfield, Irma (Frank) Rios of Liberty, New York, Ruth (Dave) Brown of N. Carolina; and a brother, Ray (Lisa) Cook of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy Marie Blackwell, 99, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away November 17, 2016 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born May 29, 1917 in Davis County, Iowa to Clem and Carrie Martin York. She married Grant W. Blackwell on October 29, 1964 in Scotland County, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1979. Dorothy was a member of the Barker United Methodist Church and was active with the United Methodist Women, the Davis County Historical Society, and the Welcome Center in Bloomfield.

She is survived by a son, Bob (Linda Raines) Blackwell of Ottumwa, Iowa; four daughters, Sandy (Phil Herteen) McCarthy of Milton, Iowa, Joan Hicks of Henderson, Nevada, Linda Cohrt of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Nancy (Rollie) Cantrell of Marion, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Donald, John, and Beverly Pitman; grandson, Eric Cohrt; four brothers, Sylvester, Max, Joe, and Dickie York; two sisters, Gladys Vaught, Beulah Stockham; sons-in-law, Vince McCarthy, Darwin Cohrt; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Blackwell.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Barker Cemetery in Scotland County, Missouri. The family will be present to greet friends on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield before proceeding to the cemetery for services. Memorials have been established to the North Barker Cemetery Association and Hospice of Mahaska County.
